About the Captain
My name is Ralph Magee, Jr. I grew up in Hanover County, VA and have lived here almost my entire life. I'm married to my wife Anne and we have two wonderful daughters, Kendall and Anna. As a child, I was introduced to fishing by my father Ralph Sr, and uncle Billy Wright. Some of my earliest memories are of camping and fishing trips with them throughout our fine state. As the year progressed, the student became the teacher and now I take them fishing every chance I get.

I describe myself as being passionate about fishing. Don't take that word lightly... my wife will tell you the truth. I love to be on the water and enjoy sharing it with new people. Because I have lived in this area my whole life, I have an appreciation for the local ecology, and I take my responsibility for protecting our river habitats seriously.

I'm a fully insured and licensed US Coast Guard Captain. Fishing year round, I target almost anything that swims in our tidal rivers. However, I specialize in trophy Blue Catfish on the James and Pamunkey Rivers. The James River is recognized as one of the nations' greatest Blue Cat fisheries. In my opinion, one of the tidal rivers in Virginia will one day be the home of the National record, currently 124 pounds caught in the Mississippi River in 2005. In 2009, Virginia eclipsed the 100 pound mark with this 102lbs, 4oz monster caught by Tim Wilson and Danny Ayers of Rockbridge County. These anglers should be recognized not only for the catch but the significant efforts to release the fish. She is likely still swimming today. What will she weigh this year??? Book a trip with me this year and we can try to find out!

Trophy catfish make impressive pictures and certainly provide some of the most exciting rod bending experiences. However, this type of fishing doesn't appeal to everyone. I'm more than willing to adapt to your fishing desires. In addition to guided catfish charters, I also offer freshwater charters for Striper, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Gar, Carp, Bowfin, Ring Perch, White Perch, Crappie, Bream and seasonal shad fishing. My saltwater charters include Striper, Flounder, Croaker and Spot. See When and Where to determine the best seasons for each species.

In my off time, I enjoy competing in a local bass trail called the Pamunkey Mini Series. I fished most of the events in 2009 and although I wasn't able to take the title home, I was able to money and consistently place in the top 15. Follow my 2010 results on my blog or the Pamunkey Mini Series Site.

For the wildlife enthusiast, I offer bird watching and wildlife photography tours. Few Virginians know how successful the Bald Eagles have responded to significant conservation efforts. The James River is home to the largest Eagle nesting habitat on the east coast. It's also common to find deer swimming across the river and other exciting wildlife enjoying Virginia's tidal rivers.

I sincerely look forward to experiencing the river with you soon.
